A European alternative to SurveyMonkey: what to check
SurveyMonkey is a widespread, capable tool, but for many European organizations three aspects become a problem: where the data ends up, what it really costs as responses grow, and how hard it is to put your own brand on it. If you’re looking for an alternative, here are the criteria that matter more than feature lists.
1. Where data is processed
This is often what drives the switch. Several US platforms process data outside the European Union, which must be disclosed in your privacy notice and handled with transfer safeguards. A platform that stores data entirely in the EU removes the problem at the root — a concrete advantage in healthcare, academic and public-sector settings.
2. The real cost, beyond the list price
Many plans cap responses and then bill the overage, or unlock the useful features only on higher tiers. Check the per-response cost as volumes rise, and whether there are automatic charges. A prepaid-package structure with no automatic charge keeps spending predictable.
3. White-label and your own brand
If you send questionnaires to clients or members, having them see your brand — not the vendor’s — changes perception. On many platforms full white-label is reserved for the most expensive enterprise tiers.
4. Research methodologies and AI
If you need MaxDiff, Conjoint, TURF or open-answer analysis, check whether they’re included or sold separately. The same goes for AI: questionnaire generation, pre-launch review, thematic analysis. Having them in the product avoids paid add-ons.
How Sunset compares
Sunset is European by design: data in Frankfurt, GDPR by design, package pricing with no automatic charge, white-label from day one, research methodologies and AI included. It isn’t “cheaper” in absolute terms: it’s built for those who put data residency, predictable spending and their own brand first.
